DAY TRIP ROUTES
Claydon Top Lock & return – 3 hours cruising time with no locks.
Heading south from the marina, you soon see the Oxford to Leamington Spa railway running alongside the canal to the right, with countryside views all around.
After 10 minutes, pass under the A423 road and enter Fenny Compton ‘tunnel’. Originally an 18th century 1138-yard tunnel, it was widened 100 years later and the tunnel itself demolished. It’s now a straight cutting through the woods, still known as ‘The Tunnel’.
Past Wormleighton Reservoir, you’ll need to open the Boundary Lift Bridge, before continuing past farmland to Bridge 144 Claydon Top Bridge, where you can turn your boat just before the lock.
It’s just under an hour and a half to cruise back to Fenny Marina, so you’ve got time if you’d like to continue past the marina for just a few minutes to Fenny Compton Wharf and The Wharf Inn which is canalside.
Marston Doles and return Marston Doles and return – 5.5 hours cruising time with no locks.
The route is dotted with attractive brick-arch bridges, and you should turn your boat just after Bridge 122.
It’s just over 2 and a half hours’ cruising back to the marina. If you have time, the Wharf Inn is canalside just 10 minutes’ cruising before the marina so you can stop for some well-earned refreshments!
