DAY TRIP ROUTES
Whaley Bridge & Return 3 Hours with 0 Locks
Heading south from the marina, there are spectacular views to the left-hand side over the Goyt Valley and Kinder Scout, the highest plateau in England.
Pass through Carr Swing Bridge (operated by key) and over a small aqueduct before reaching Furness Vale, a pretty village with The Crossings Pub a short walk from Bridge 31 on the right.
Just another 30 minutes’ lock free cruising and you arrive at Whaley Bridge, the terminus of the canal. Alight and explore the town, which has numerous shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants.
Back on the canal, retrace your steps but turn right to cruise the short distance to Bugsworth Basin, crossing over the beautiful River Goyt on the way. The Navigation Inn is canal side here for refreshments. It’s just under an hour and a half to cruise back to New Mills Marina.
Marple Junction & Return 4.5 Hours with 0 Locks
Leaving the marina heading north, the aroma of the Swizzells sweet factory is very tempting.
Cruising onwards there are fantastic views to the right over rolling countryside and distant railways. Get to stop the traffic at Bridges 25 and 24 where the road swings aside or lifts up in the air!
Use your windlass at Turf Lee Lift Bridge 22 and then arrive at Marple Junction less than an hour later. You can turn your boat and moor up before visiting the town, perhaps watching the boats going through the Marple lock flight or visiting The Hatters Arms. Alternatively, take a walk for just over a mile to visit the stunning Marple Aqueduct.
It’s just over 2 hours’ cruising back to the marina.
